A downloadable game

A free and fun snake-like game. This is a Commodore 64 version of the original Munchy Worm game by Antibody Software.

Munchy Worm was featured on the cover disk of ZZap64's Jun/Jul 2026 issue #32!

Eat mushrooms for points and to grow longer. The longer your worm is the more you score. Avoid the walls and your own tail. Eat mushrooms rapidly to increase the score multiplier. Eat stars to shrink your worm. Each new star will take longer to spawn than the previous so make use of them sparingly.

HIGH SCORE TIPS
Avoid eating the star for as long as possible as a longer worm means higher points. Get the score multiplier up as high as possible early on while the worm is still moving relatively slowly.

KEYBOARD
Use WASD or IJKL to move the worm. Inputs are buffered so you can make quick turns by rapidly pressing the appropriate direction keys without waiting for the worm to move first.

JOYSTICK
Version 1.01 adds Joystick support (in port 2). Joystick movements are buffered similarly to the keyboard controls, so you can make multiple quick joystick movements and the worm will follow them all one by one. To make tight turns, pull the joystick diagonally in the opposite direction to the worm and it will do a 180 turn towards the diagonal. For example if the worm is moving up and you want to do a quick right and down, then press the joystick diagonally down and right. To make this less prone to input error, you can first press and hold down and then quickly slide the joystick to the down-right diagonal - this will have the same effect as moving right and down quickly.

IF USING AN EMULATOR
If you're using an emulator please don't use the arrow keys to move - use WASD, IJKL  or whichever keys are emulating the joystick (normally the numpad on VICE). Emulators don't translate arrow keys to C64 cursor keys perfectly at high speed which can cause the worm to move in the wrong direction if you press the keys too rapidly.

TECHNICAL
This game uses some raster tricks combined with clever use of sprites and user defined characters to produce smooth pixel-fine worm movement, and to squeeze extra colors into each cell without having to use blocky multicolor graphic modes.

MUSIC
Thanks to Richard Bayliss for very kindly writing an original piece of music for the game, and for providing the technical info required to implement it.

LATEST UPDATE
Version 1.05 tweaks the sound effects to make them louder. The addition of music in 1.04 made the sound effects sound a bit soft in comparison, so they've been adjusted.

This is a .d64 disk image file. Write it to a floppy for a real C64 or run it with your favorite C64 emulator. Works on PAL and NTSC.

Thank you for using my music. It is a nice update, I am happy that my music worked out for you.  Somehow the in game sound effects to appear to be more silent compared to how they were previously - unless that was intended?. Maybe after disabling the music, you should completely initialise the SID/ADSR and then set to full volume afterwards.

Great update. Superb animations and I am very happy to see a hi score table has been added to this game. What I'd love to see included in a future update of this game is some fun title music and maybe a game over jingle and hi score tune. Of course that will be entirely up to you. ;) 

Thanks! Music is a great idea but I don't know anything about SID music and/or the tools that are required. You on the other hand appear to be an expert. Is this something you could help me with?

Of course. A lot of SID tunes tend to have their own based music players where music can be initialised at an address before an IRQ plays and then inside the main IRQ raster interrupt. Music can play. Assuming you are using CBMPRGStudio's default assembly language:

Where your variables are, add the following:


musicinit = $1000
musicplay = $1003

Where adding the binary to your project add (for example)
            *=$1000   
            incbin "music.prg",2 ;(Or if .dat, use that extension)

Before your IRQ raster interrupt add the following code:

            ;Initialise music
             lda #0
             jsr musicinit

Inside your IRQ raster interrupt add:

          ;Play music
          jsr musicplay

That's how it is done :)             

So I can use SID tunes I find online or make my own? I found this huge collection online (https://www.cosmos-c64.com/The-Epic-Commodore-C64-SID-Collection.html) but I'm not sure if it's legal for me to use any of these in the game.

I really enjoyed the game! The gameplay is a lot of fun, and it's clear that a lot of work went into its development.

I'm curious about the tools you used to create it. Was it developed in Assembly (ASM), C, or a combination of both?

This is brilliant! 

Is there any chance of an option to redefine keys if stick and arrows arent allowed? WASD is not the best combination for this type of game IMO. Something like AZ<> feels a little more intuitive. Personal preference :)

After some days, I still play it regularly. It is very addictive. For me it's the best Snake alternative so far and it works on a more than 40 years old computer. Awesome stuff Antibody.

There is even a browser and windows version available folks!

I checked this game out last night. It was fun to play, and quite addictive. The only things I would suggest would be include a hi score table, and also allow player control using Joystick in Port 2. Still, I enjoyed this game. Well done.

Nice Worms/Snake clone with good and precise control for the player-sprite (which is important in that kind of games). Good job! Do you have any plans, to expand the game further, perhaps by adding a simultaneous two-player mode, or something similar? Regards.

Thanks! If it's popular enough I'll consider expanding it further. Not sure how a 2 player simultaneous version would work but it's an interesting idea. A combo of snake and TRON light cycles...?

Indeed, that's exactly what I had in mind, when making this suggestion, a mix of Snake/Worm and Tron elements.
